Torque Converter Shudder

If you are working on a vehicle that is expected to have torque converter shudder, you must first determine if the shudder is trans or engine related. You may do this by brake torqueing the vehicle, trying to duplicate the same load the engine had when experiencing the shudder. If an engine miss is experienced at this time, the most likely cause would be plugs and or wires. Replace the plugs and wires and the shudder will probably go away.

If no engine miss is experienced, the problem is most likely transmission or fluid related. Although today's transmission fluids are superior to past fluids, the friction modifiers in the fluids can still break down. If this is the case, a fluid change may be all that is necessary to cure the problem. This is true on lots of newer vehicles that have computer controlled clutch slippage.

If the fluid change doesn't help, then you most likely have mechanical or hydraulic problems with the transmission or converter and it may be necessary to overhaul the transmission.
